Do You Want to Date My Avatar?
A Video Review by Maxwell J. Provo
On Avatars, for Starters
Chances are if you do not think you look good, you use an avatar online to protect that face that you keep telling yourself is “unique.” Oh, I’m only playing. We know you’re beautiful and, if you’re not, we feel your pain. But hey, all joking around, your avatar says a lot about you, right? In a game it says whether you are a mage or archer, warrior or priest. (Who ever chooses to be a priest? Come on, man…) Whatever you are, you’re avatar lets the other people around you know that you mean business! (Or not if you’re a jester.)
Avatars not only serve to show your function within a huge, multiplayer game but also go to show what you are not in real life. I mean, if you’re a potbellied, beer-swizzling, pizza-gouging forty year old, I’d bet anything your avatar is a lean, mean, 21-looking guy who can swing an axe and cast as many spells as he wants. In other words, a virtual babe magnet. So, the bottom line is an avatar is what you want to be known as. Not what actually are.
Now, the Video
“Do You Want to Date my Avatar?” is a cute little ditty put out by the actors and actresses on a little-known web series called “The Guild.” “The Guild,” written by Felicia Day (that voluptuous vixen playing the avatar in the video), is a Streamy-winning show that focuses on the lives of members of an online guild called “The Knights of Good.” Chronicling the lives—both real and virtual—of the gamers, the series has won eight short video awards and has been nominated for two others since its debut in 2007.
This music video is part of a promotional series of videos that aim to further awareness of the series, which is growing every year in terms of viewers and publicity. Even though it is a seemingly inane video, it is actually really well-written and choreographed. The song has some really great lines in it such as “you can touch my plus two-five dexterity vest”—admittedly, on the first viewing, I thought that Felicia was going to say breasts. The quick turn-around allows the line to get what it needs: laughs. Interestingly enough, the song also makes reference to pop songwriting trends with its addition of a bridge that Jeff Lewis (who stars as Vork and Herman Holden in the show [“real life” and game name respecitively; I know, it is a little confusing]), raps. That type of song structure brings up memories, fond or otherwise, of Katy Perry’s California Gurls, released all the way back in 2009.
While “Do You Want to Date my Avatar?” is a publicity piece, it also succeeds as an entertainment piece. Clever song writing and some pretty tight choreography really make the video pop out of the screen more than an animated flick or voice over with a screen reading “WATCH OUR VIDEO, YOU SONS OF BITCHES,” or something along those lines.
The entire cast of “The Guild” has some sort of role in the video, which is a good way to get viewers familiar with who’s in the show. Coincidentally enough, each one’s avatar that appears in the video shows you a little about them within the series. Below I listed the main cast of “The Guild.” The first name is the actors name, the second is their in-game name, and the third is their real-life name within the series!
Actor / Character “in game” / Character in “real life”
Felicia Day - Codex - Cyd Sherman
Sandeep Parikh - Zaboo - Sujan Balakrishnan Goldberg
Jeff Lewis - Vork - Herman Holden
Vincet Caso - Bladezz - Simon Kemplar
Robin Thorsen - Clara - Clara Beane
Amy Okuda - Tinkerballa - April Lout
If you’re into gaming, pretending to be someone you’re not, or identity theft, check out the guys and girls over at “The Guild.” Support them by talking them up to your friends in your own MMORPG (I know that you know what that means!) and maybe, just maybe, you can land a date with Felicia’s avatar!
“The Guild” is on YouTube, iTunes, and the Microsoft Marketplace! Seasons are also available on DVD from Amazon; check it out! It has StickMan’s Official Stick of Approval! (So what if I just made that up?)Do You Want to Date My Avatar,
