This is (by far) the best gaming music video around to get your day started. Turn up the speakers, play, repeat … forget about work.
Dance in you cube baby .. get your geek on.
Team Unicorn Does Gamers Proud
In this video, “Geek & Gamer Girls,” Team Unicorn makes their big splash in the pool of geek-dom. In an effort to raise awareness about beautiful women that also enjoy all geeky things, Team Unicorn formed in 2010 in Los Angeles. Composed of four members, Michele Boyd, Clare Grant, Milynn Sarley, and Rileah Vanderbilt, Team Unicorn designs multimedia videos for the population of geeky dudes of the world.
With five projects already released, Team Unicorn is starting to really breakthrough in the gaming and geek worlds. Their website, TeamUnicornFTW.com boasts a store and connections to each member’s personal site and twitter. Team Unicorn’s Facebook page has nearly 1,000 likes with plenty of people mentioning them in posts!
And Now, the Video
Obviously, “Geek & Gamer Girls” is a spoof of Katy Perry and Snoop Dogg’s “California Gurls.” The song structure is identical and the beats, intonations, and rhythm are spot-on. Even the lengths of the songs are close – the only reason Team Unicorn’s ditty has thirty seconds more is because of the credits that play at the end of the video.
Unlike Team Unicorn’s video “SuperHarmony,” this video made me laugh more. (Maybe that’s not saying much because that one didn’t make me laugh at all, but I digress.) The references were funny, the content relatable, and the tune catchy, even though that is probably due to the song being familiar on a musical level.
The ladies at Team Unicorn load this video with copious references for people on every end of the geek spectrum. Sure, there are some Star Wars ones (an obvious double entendre with “put your sabers up,” “we know that Han shot first”), Dungeons and Dragons ones, and at least a single Doom reference. As silly and stupid as this video may be, through the references Team Unicorn shows that they actually know what kind of humor to direct at their targeted audience of nerds and geeky aficionados.
One of the better touches were the fat guy in a jumpsuit with onomatopoeia such as “bloop,” “bleep,” and “blurt” appearing around him as the corresponding sounds played in the background.
Team Unicorn clearly doesn’t want editing, singing, dancing, or singing skill for Christmas, either. Throughout the video the girls sing surprisingly well and dance in a very coordinated, very skilled fashion – when the chorus came along and all the lovelies joined in, it is hard not to get up and dance it along!
The music video’s editing was also superb and included some great special effects and backgrounds. Most notable for me were the light sabers in the beginning of the video where Michele is lying down on a stack of comic books.
Another great aspect of the video were cameos by the great Stan Lee, author of several comic book series. Seemingly small touches added up to huge sums in “Geek & Gamer Girls.”
The Bottom Line
“G33K & G4M3R Girls” incorporates a wide variety of techniques (from technical to comedic) to give the audience a fun four minutes and twenty seconds. With all of the references and clever lyric writing, it is not hard to see why this video has garnered over 1,000,000 hits on YouTube so far. From the two videos by Team Unicorn that I have seen, this is by far my favorite – mostly because I understood the references.Geek and Gamers Video,
